The Team You Will Join
We are seeking a highly motivated attorney to join MetLife’s Government & Legal Affairs department. The position is in the Regulatory, Broker-Dealer & Reinsurance Unit of the US Insurance Law section of Legal Affairs.
The Opportunity
The AVP & Assistant General Counsel will support our U.S. Business by providing strategic legal counsel on insurance and broker-dealer regulatory matters, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and industry requirements. This role also serves as the legal officer for MetLife’s Broker-Dealer affiliate, overseeing broker-dealer governance and regulatory obligations. The position requires strong leadership, regulatory expertise, and the ability to manage complex projects across multiple jurisdictions and enterprise stakeholders.
The candidate must be able to provide excellent legal advice and representation, have demonstrated a high degree of discretion and judgment, have the intellectual curiosity to keep abreast of the changing legal climate on issues relevant to a global provider of protection planning and retirement and savings solutions, be detail-oriented, and have a strong commitment to personal growth.
How You’ll Help Us Build a Confident Future:
The attorney in this position will be expected to handle a broad range of regulatory matters for MetLife’s Broker-Dealer affiliate, with responsibilities including FINRA compliance, written supervisory procedures, registration requirements, e-communications, form filings, compensation, financial and other reporting requirements, third party relationships, advertising, internal audits and litigation, among others.
In addition, this attorney will also manage regulatory examinations across multiple legal entities and lines of business. Responsibilities will vary based on the examination, but may include liaising with regulators and internal stakeholders, assisting with tracking and managing requests and responses and providing related legal advice, drafting and filing responses, managing the closing process and documentation of any required remediation.
The attorney will also be handling complex regulatory matters, such as escalated customer complaints to state or federal regulators, targeted investigations and negotiation of consent orders, fines and penalties in close partnership with our stakeholders. Responsibilities will include advising internal clients with respect to risks presented by regulatory requirements and identifying risk mitigation opportunities to improve processes and business practices.
The attorney will need to understand and proactively advise on current and future regulatory requirements related to the matters identified above.
What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications):
- J.D. degree from accredited law school
- Excellent academic credentials
- Admission to New York bar
- 10+ years of experience, including Broker-Dealer or FINRA experience, reflecting a record of accomplishment
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills
- Superior oral and written communications skills
- Ability to build relationships across the company and with regulators
- Attention to detail, sense of urgency, ability to handle substantial workload effectively (i.e., establish priorities, adhere to deadlines)
- Willingness to partner with colleagues and business partners to contribute to success of the US Insurance Law Section, Government & Legal Affairs, and MetLife
- Ability to thrive as a team member and individual contributor in a high-performance culture
- Ability to provide creative input in a culture of continuous improvement with respect to policies and procedures of the Law Department and our business partners.
