Sustainability

At MetLife, we know that creating meaningful change requires all of us working together—it’s the essence of our “All Together Possible” mindset. When we meet with candidates, we are often asked about our sustainability commitments: specifically, what values guide us and what actions we’re taking to make a difference. We love these questions because they give us a chance to show how our purpose is woven into everything we do. That’s why we’re excited to share key highlights from our latest Sustainability Report, showing how we come together to live our purpose every daywhether as an employer, investor, and provider of financial solutions and expertiseand how we support the communities where we work.

Sustainability at MetLife means managing business responsibly and sustaining people throughout their lives through the strength of our colleagues, products, services, and investments. Each year, colleagues across teams (including our CEO!) come together to create and publish our Sustainability Report. This global report is more than a collection of data, it’s a story of how we care for our colleagues, customers, shareholders, communities, and the environment. It’s about how we’re working together around the world to build a more sustainable and inclusive future for all. So, if you are considering joining us or simply want to learn more about our commitment to sustainability, we invite you to explore these highlights from our latest Sustainability Report.

FOR OUR COLLEAGUES

Our commitment starts by fueling the energy and passion within our teams. We care about our employees, who make our purpose and products a reality, and touch millions of lives around the world. We are committed to creating a workplace where they can grow and thrive, both in their work and in their life.

  • We continue to improve our mental health benefits as part of our ThriveGlobal® #MentalHealthPledge. We make it easy and affordable for employees to access mental health care, like covering out-of-network office visits at high reimbursement levels in the U.S., offering employee assistance programs in 19 countries, and a variety of virtual mental health care options.
  • We also care about helping our colleagues learn and grow with our digital talent marketplace, MyPath. This platform helps employees upskill in critical areas, network with others across the globe, and work on different projects. In 2023, over 9,500 employees around the world have participated in projects helping them find new passions and skills, with some even making career shifts!

At MetLife, we are embraced by a dynamic environment that values kindness, empowerment, and personal growth. Here, we are not just employees, we are tharchitects of the future.

FOR OUR CUSTOMERS

We are committed to understanding our customers and creating solutions that make a real difference in their lives. Our culture of innovation and sustainability, with a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), empowers us to encourage new perspectives and think creatively so we can better meet the diverse needs of our customers. Add dedication and expertise into the mix and we enhance not only customer satisfaction but keep customer care at the forefront.

  • One of the highlights of 2023 was our Global Hackathon, where nearly 3,000 MetLife associates teamed up to enhance customer care. For four weeks, teams collaborated to develop and pitch more than 300 innovative, tech-driven solutions. This year’s hackathon was even larger in scope. The winning project came from the “Autobots team” in Asia, who proposed a solution to transform end-to-end customer care with AI by implementing a 24/7 voice-based chatbot with real-time intelligence. Congratulations, team!
  • We also expanded MetLife 360Health to two new markets in 2023: Nepal and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This platform offers comprehensive support for mental, physical, financial and social health, focused on prevention, early diagnosis, access to treatment, ongoing care and financial protection. Available via mobile app and online portals, MetLife 360Health has helped over 1 million users in Asia access expert medical support.

“We have a constant focus on process improvement and enhancing the end-to-end customer experience. We encourage candid dialogue around opportunities and pursue innovative ways to enhance the customer experience.

FOR THE ENVIRONMENT:

As a company with a long history of caring for the environment, we kept the momentum going in 2023. We leveraged our expertise to protect biodiversity and ecosystems for a healthier environment.

  • One of those efforts was our EcoChallenge competition, bringing together over 4,600 employees from 38 markets to adopt green habits through our employee engagement program to promote environmental stewardship - Our Green Impact. Alongside this, employees logged over 10,000 volunteer hours for global litter clean-ups. We’ve also made significant strides with our tree-planting goal, proudly planting over 1.6 million trees since 2020, moving us closer to our pledge of 5 million trees planted by 2030.
  • We are also dedicated to bringing sustainability to our office operations. Since 2019, we've reduced our location-based emissions by 44% and continue to look for ways to save energy and adopt green building practices. This commitment led us to achieve a milestone in 2023: 48% of our global office space now meets green or healthy building standards, putting us ahead of our 40% target for 2030.

FOR OUR COMMUNITIES:

We are proud of the impact that MetLife Foundation and employee volunteers have made in our communities, often in their time of greatest need.

  • Since its founding in 1976, MetLife Foundation has been committed to supporting our communities through philanthropy, impact investments, and employee volunteerism. In 2023, the Foundation surpassed $1 billion in giving. To honor this milestone, Mayor Eric Adams designated September 14, 2023, as MetLife Foundation Day in New York City.
  • Our dedication also shines through our employee volunteer initiatives, where we focus on community engagement and support throughout the year. Across regions and departments, MetLife colleagues contribute their time and skills to a range of initiatives, including education, environmental efforts, mentoring and more. In 2023, we were inspired by the 144,000+ employee volunteer hours recorded across 38 markets. This dedication not only supports our 2030 DEI Commitments, but also brings our purpose to life.
