Actuaries take numbers to a whole new level. And at MetLife, they do more than analyze data – they uncover insights, assess risk, and shape strategies that drive our business forward.  

In this series, we’re spotlighting the people behind the profession, sharing their journeys, insights, and what makes MetLife a great place to grow their career. Earlier this month, we kicked things off with Erica Provido’s story a U.S. based leader supporting the UK market who has a passion for growing the next generation of actuaries. Now we’re introducing Clarence Amurao, who has built a long-standing career at MetLife. With the support of strong mentors and a close-knit actuarial community, she’s found a place where she can grow, collaborate, and pay it forward.  

Meet Clarence, Director and Actuary, U.S. Pricing  


For Clarence, actuarial science has been a journey of continuous growth. As an international student, she launched her career through MetLife’s Actuarial Development Program – gaining hands-on experience across functions and building a strong professional network that helped shape her path. A Director and Actuary in Institutional Income Annuities (IIA) Pricing within MetLife's Retirement & Income Solutions (RIS) organization, she plays a key role in designing and pricing solutions that help businesses offer reliable retirement income to their employees.  

RIS actuaries at MetLife help design products that provide financial security for businesses and individuals alike. While Erica supports global reinsurance solutions, Clarence focuses on IIA, working with a diverse team of financial professionals to create innovative retirement income solutions for institutional customers. Her team helps design and price products – including benefit quoting, customer inquiries, and actuarial support for annuitants – and continues to raise the bar through process optimization and tool enhancements. The actuarial foundation her team provides allows the IIA business to help organizations deliver secure, long-term financial benefits to their employees. 

A Career That Keeps Evolving 

Clarence’s love for math led her to actuarial science, but it’s the variety and complexity of the work that keeps her engaged.  

“It’s a flexible field—you can work in insurance, banking, assets, liabilities—there’s always something new to learn. The rotational program exposed me to many functions, so you explore different areas, and they make sure each new role is different from your last. That variety keeps things interesting.” 

That breadth of experience has been invaluable as she tackles pricing and risk management, ensuring MetLife delivers solutions that support long-term financial security for individuals. 

But for Clarence, it’s not just about technical skills – it's about career growth and leadership. 

“One of the best things about my role here is that you’re not limited to just modeling or other technically intensive work. You can move into leadership positions because you have that deep technical understanding of the business. I’ve had incredibly supportive managers who believed in me even when I doubted myself. They encouraged me to take on new opportunities – even if it meant losing me from their team. That kind of support makes a difference. It’s why I pay it forward and do the same for my team.” 

Support and growth are things Clarence values deeply. From early career development to leadership opportunities, MetLife fosters an environment where actuaries can collaborate, expand their expertise, and make a lasting impact. 

The Moment It All Clicked 

One of Clarence’s biggest growth moments came when she passed her actuarial exams and became an FSA, leading to her promotion to Director. 

“Going from the rotational program – where you rely on your manager – to becoming a manager myself was a big shift. I took on more leadership responsibilities and ownership of projects. It was scary, but it was also exciting. My team and manager believed in me, and that gave me the confidence to grow.”

Clarence has spent her entire career at MetLife, and there’s a reason for that. 

“It’s the culture. I can’t compare it firsthand, but hearing from friends in the industry, MetLife truly values its employees. There’s a family feel, a strong respect for work-life balance, and a commitment to growth. And the tools we use, like Alteryx, make our work easier - it's one of my favorites because it’s user-friendly and helps us analyze large amounts of data efficiently.” 

She also appreciates how MetLife fosters an inclusive culture, especially for women in the actuarial field. 

"I’ve never felt dismissed here. People listen – no matter your gender and background, people listen to you.” 

Making an Impact 

As part of the U.S. Pricing team, Clarence plays a crucial role in supporting customers. 

"We provide different options for retirement income. We’re also at the forefront when an annuitant needs assistance, whether it’s a death benefit or adjustment to their annuity benefit. It’s meaningful work that directly impacts people’s lives.”  

A Culture of Community and Support 

“It feels like my second family. I’ve worked with so many actuaries here – some I did my exams with, and now I see them growing into leadership roles. If I ever have a question for a different team, I know someone in another department will help. People genuinely want to support each other here. I’ve seen some people that have left eventually come back to MetLife – I feel like that says a lot.” 

Clarence’s story highlights the diverse opportunities actuaries can explore at different stages of their career. From hands-on learning and networking in the Actuarial Development Program to leading teams, she’s built a career that keeps her engaged and energized, truly demonstrating the power of a supportive work community to shape your career.
