The Global Sustainability, AFC and Corporate Regulatory Unit is an active and fast-paced team within MetLife’s Legal Affairs.  Currently, the Unit has broad responsibilities to provide legal support to several business and functional areas of MetLife. 

 

We are seeking an attorney to provide legal advice with respect to compliance with anti-bribery and corruption (ABC), anti-money laundering (AML) and economic and trade sanctions (sanctions) laws and regulations. This role entails working closely and collaboratively with Compliance and Business Management on strategic initiatives and emerging matters, as well as helping ensure compliance across our global business operations.  In addition, this role requires an ability to partner with peers to ensure discipline and consistency around Corporate Ethics and Compliance’s global coverage model. 

 

The candidate must be able to provide excellent legal advice and representation, have demonstrated a high degree of discretion, judgment and independence, have outstanding  communication skills and the ability to interact with senior leaders of the Company, have the intellectual curiosity to understand the interplay of various constituencies and keep abreast of the changing legal climate, be detail-oriented, and have a strong commitment to personal growth and demonstrating leadership. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice on U.S. and international sanctions, AML requirements, FCPA and anti-corruption laws, including revisions and new regulations. 
  • Advise on interpretation and implementation of economic sanctions; serve as a point of contact with OFAC, MetLife’s US sanctions regulator. 
  • Review and advise on Anti-Financial Crime (AFC) policies, procedures and risks.  
  • Regularly advise the Global Head of AFC Compliance and team. 
  • Collaborate on M&A and other third-party deals serving as sanctions/AML/ABC subject matter expert. 
  • Other responsibilities include research and writing, advising business clients regarding regulatory risks, and developing and presenting training.
  • Managing outside counsel, developing and executing strategy and reviewing outside counsel invoices.

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required:

  • Hold a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to the New York State (or other appropriate) bar.
  • Have at least 5-7 years of AML/ABC/sanctions experience at a major law firm and/or in-house legal department, reflecting a record of accomplishment.  Insurance and/or other financial services industry experience is a plus.  International experience is also a plus. 
  • Exhibit crisp, clear oral and written communication skills; demonstrates the ability to reduce legal issues to straightforward practical analysis and advice. 

Preferred:

  • Demonstrates persuasion and leadership skills, especially in the context of the ability to relate to different stakeholders, business partners and colleagues.  
  • Commands strong drafting, negotiating and analytical skills.

The expected salary range for this position is $156,800 - $209,000. This role may also be eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
