Position: AVP, Government Affairs Strategy & Policy

Reports to: VP, Head of Strategy, Policy and Operations
Travel: Up to 15%
The Opportunity
The AVP, Strategy & Policy, reporting directly to the VP, Head of Strategy, Policy and Operations, will conduct research, monitor geopolitical, legislative and regulatory developments, and prepare policy and executive briefs as well as advocacy materials. This role will also proactively advise internal stakeholders and help ensure a unified approach to policy matters. This role is designed for individuals who have developed strong analytical, research, writing, and organizational skills through prior policy/legislative-related experience and who possess a deep interest in public policy, with a preference for experience in the financial services sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Track and analyze federal, state and international legislative, regulatory, and policy developments impacting insurance and asset management operations
- Track and analyze geopolitical developments relevant for MetLife’s markets, and develop insights to share with key internal business partners; support development of scenario plans where required
- Prepare and produce materials for meetings and events with business lines, internal functions, and external groups, including producing impactful and complex materials that may require confidential treatment
- Prepare complex briefing materials for executive participation in key meetings
- Work with advocacy staff on research and writing policy briefs, position papers and responses to public consultations
- Develop and manage project-related data associated with advocacy activities
- Utilize the latest AI and other digital tools in fulfilling job responsibilities in order to maximize efficiencies and deliver high-quality content in accordance with multiple deadlines
- Using all available digital tools, monitor and produce timely updates on certain social media activities for legislative and regulatory activity, and relevant stakeholder comments on policy and societal issues impacting MetLife
- Support stakeholder engagement activities, including representing MetLife when required
- Provide clear verbal and written communications
- Coordinate meetings, prepare presentations and manage policy-related databases
Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in policy analysis, government relations or related internships or fellowships
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Business or related field
- Experience on Capitol Hill, the Executive Branch or in a government affairs or related role
- Possess a self-starter/ownership mindset
- Familiarity with legislative processes, public policy development, and regulatory environments
- Ability to work independently, anticipate needs, look ahead, plan for contingencies, manage and prioritize concurrent tasks and follow-ups
- Deliver quality results while operating within MetLife’s values and ethical standards
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Proficient technology user and adopter of emerging innovations, especially the use of AI tools in the public policy space
- Keen design skills for impactful presentations
- Excellent ability to search, organize, evaluate and present information—oral and written—on complex topics
- Superb inter-personal skills, demonstrating an ease with interacting professionally – at senior levels—within and across functional teams and with key stakeholders
- Flexibility to move between competing priorities as needed/directed
- Ability to work autonomously; effectively handle multiple tasks and prioritize deadlines appropriately
