The Opportunity
The Sales & Use Tax Director – this role oversees all aspects of sales and use tax including monthly compliance filings, taxability analysis, system configuration, reporting, and risk mitigation. The Director provides strategic guidance, manages a high-performing team, and drives continuous improvement across the indirect tax function.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the company’s overall sales and use tax strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert for all sales/use tax matters across the organization.
- Oversee prep, filing, and remittance of monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across all applicable U.S. jurisdictions.
- Ensure accurate tax calculations, reporting, and documentation in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Lead all state and local sales/use tax audits, inquiries, and notices; manage responses and negotiate with taxing authorities.
- Oversee tax engine configuration (Vertex) and integrations with ERP and billing platforms.
- Collaborate with IT and Finance to implement tax-related system changes.
- Partner with cross-functional teams – including Procurement, Accounts Payable, Billing, and Sales to ensure correct tax treatment of transactions.
- Provide guidance on tax implications for new products, services, business models, and M&A activities.
- Communicate complex tax issues clearly to non-tax stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in U.S. sales and use tax, including leadership.
- Deep knowledge of multistate tax laws, nexus standards, and indirect tax compliance.
- Experience managing tax engine system, Vertex.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop tax teams.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and change leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a multi-entity, multi-state corporate environment.
- ERP experience, Workday.
