Role Value Proposition: 

Selected candidate ensures Group Disability and Absence Management products are compliant with state and federal laws and regulations by means of timely and thorough analysis, and the development and implementation of business policies and procedures.  Candidate will also provide thought leadership and advocate/influence new statutes and regulations to best align with MetLife’s Group Benefits product and operations capabilities for disability and employer leave mandates, in particular Paid Family & Medical Leave.


Key Responsibilities:

·     (Group Disability Product):  Review proposed and enacted legislation, regulatory orders, and existing policies and procedures for compliance with all regulatory requirements, developing and documenting new or revised policies and procedures to comply with such regulatory requirements and creating communications and training materials to assist in implementation of new or revised policies and procedures under the direction of the Disability Compliance Lead.

    • Research business processes to determine whether they comply with legislative and regulatory mandates, including researching facts relating to market conduct exam findings.
    • Participate in the development and implementation of compliant business processes required to comply with legislative and regulatory mandates relating to disability insurance and employer leave mandates. 
    • Partner with the Disability business units and the Law Department to ensure all affected parties are consulted during the documentation process and that all new or revised business processes can be administered efficiently and consistently.
    • Subject matter expert for responding to group disability queries related to annual Market Conduct Annual Statement (MCAS)
    • Ensure MCAS filing, state data calls, and market conduct exam responses are submitted timely and perform pre-submission QA, updating procedures to align with system enhancements
    • Provide assistance with matters involving privacy and confidential information, responding to requests for and/or disclosure of private information.
    • Represent Group Disability on cross-product and line of business projects, including child support intercept

·     (Paid Family & Medical Leave):  Review current plan offerings for compliance with existing and developing state and federal laws related to Paid Family & Medical Leave.  Responsible for notification and analysis of annual state updates and other off cycle PFML changes.  Review product content for compliance with PFML laws when state updates are made.  Support review of annual CMG updates and claims questions for current programs. 

    • Coordinate with the Law Department and Disability business unit on new product development specific to Paid Family & Medical Leave.
    • Subject matter expert representing MetLife in trade and industry groups to shape and influence state legislative and regulatory proposals and provide substantive recommendations.  Review and assist business units on policy language development.  

 

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

 Required:

  •        Bachelor’s degree
  •       3+ years of experience performing research on laws & regulations
  •       5+ years of experience in Group Benefits, preferably Disability and State Paid/Unpaid Leave Programs, and associated laws such as the ADA, ERISA, etc.

 Preferred:

  •        Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and familiarity with computer programs.
  •        Knowledge of Lexis/Nexis and other legal research databases, and ability to learn to use insurance research tools.
  •        Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  •        Experience in statutory construction and analysis
  •        Experience in legal research and analysis, law school experience or Juris Doctor Degree preferred
  •        Excellent communication; verbal and in writing, and coordination skills.
  •        Personality and inter-personal skills to work well with others and gain their support.
  •        Good organization skills, strong work ethic, self-motivated, with the ability to work independently.
  •        Interest and enthusiasm to tackle new challenges and responsibilities.
 
 
 
 
The expected salary range for this position is 130000-160000. This role may also be eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
