In MetLife’s dynamic world of technology and innovation, Full Stack Software Engineer, Xiahan Cong, stands out as a defining force, driving systemic enhancements and bridging the gap between technical possibilities and business realities. As a full-stack engineer turned systems analyst, Xiahan’s journey embodies the spirit of continuous evolution and adaptability. From back-end coding to the strategic front lines of system analysis, her career path showcases the transformative power of embracing change within a tech-centric career.  At MetLife, Xiahan shows us that it’s #AllTogetherPossible.

Can you describe your position at MetLife?

I am a full-stack engineer, now focusing on the systems analysis side. My role is to understand what the system functionality is, what improvements to make, and understand what the stakeholders want to accomplish. On a day-to-day basis, I analyze project requirements, break them down into user stories, and then meet with developers to share the projects we’ll be working on.  I help to bring these projects to life.

What surprised you about working for an insurance company?

I have worked for larger tech companies before, and the insurance industry was very new to me. What I thought was so cool is how significantly we impact our customers’ lives. Insurance isn’t a one-time purchase, our customers are with us for years, maybe even their whole lives. People trust us, and it’s an honor to provide solutions that make things a little easier during challenging times in their lives. This job has a purpose, and I have a purpose here.

Did you ever see yourself in this role?

I have always wanted to be in IT because I love working on cutting-edge ideas and trying new technologies. I started as a developer, but I have found my interest as a functional analyst, implementing solutions and meeting with developers to create and enhance projects. My leaders supported this switch, and I’ve enjoyed learning new things. MetLife values driving professional growth and I really am an example of that. In the next few years, I’d love to learn more about project management – there is always a next step for your career at MetLife.

How does your position directly impact MetLife’s customers and associates?

I’m very proud and excited to work on the first mobile application for MetLife in Japan. The new app will allow agents to check policies on mobile devices and get push notifications immediately whenever there is an update to a policy, allowing them to service the customers more efficiently. MetLife supports its customers during challenging times, and it’s rewarding to see that my team helps to create better systems to provide the best service.

How do you stay ahead of technology trends? How does MetLife support that?

Consistent learning is key. MetLife encourages employees to earn certifications like PMP and Agile. They offer a comprehensive learning center where you can read articles and take classes.  In my personal time, I like to research trends and solutions that are being utilized in new ways and think about how they could help us support our customers.

Who are your biggest support systems inside and outside of work?

At work, my team, manager, director, and VP support me. They encourage me to try new things, which I appreciate. We have monthly one-on-one meetings with our managers to discuss what’s working and what’s not and are empowered to find solutions together. We are also encouraged to talk across teams and work collaboratively to solve problems.

Outside of work, my family and friends say I’m doing something right here. They can see my excitement about work and that enthusiasm fuels other aspects of my life as well. I am very encouraged by them.

Do you have a mentor? How do you see yourself supporting other female technologists?

My mentor, and friend, has been a great source of encouragement for me. She encouraged me to try something new, like learning English, to boost my confidence. At my previous company, we were mostly Japanese speakers, but here I've been supported in learning English! I hope to support others in a similar way.

MetLife values diversity and community within the company. How have you seen these values being demonstrated?

At MetLife, we believe in “winning together” and it’s visible in many ways. Because we’re a global company, I am exposed to different cultures, languages, and projects. It’s neat to see what teams in other countries are working on and get ideas that I can take back to my team. Additionally, my team members come from the Philippines, Hong Kong, India, and Korea. With many cultures and languages on our team, I’m always learning something new.

In the office, MetLife provides employee-led communities for volunteer work and social activities, helping us meet each other and strengthen our community at work. We also have MOMENTUM Inclusion Networks like the Women’s Business Network that are synced around the world.

What would you tell someone who’s thinking about joining MetLife?

I would encourage them to be continuously curious about new projects and technologies. We know that the tech space is changing so quickly, especially at companies like MetLife which work on a global scale. Don’t be afraid to try something new and explore new opportunities. I’m doing a completely different job than I was a few years ago –which I love! – and I don’t know if I would have been exposed to this opportunity at a different company. Also, don’t be afraid to make mistakes because it means you are always learning. And finally, language is a communication tool, and you don’t need to be completely fluent to communicate effectively.

Xiahan Cong's story at MetLife is more than just about personal growth and professional achievements; it's a testament to the nurturing environment that MetLife fosters, encouraging exploration, learning, and community building. For those considering a career at MetLife, Xiahan’s experience underscores a culture where opportunities are abundant, and every voice is valued. Her journey illustrates the profound impact one can have when driven by curiosity and supported by a community that celebrates diversity and innovation. Through her work and dedication, Xiahan is not just shaping systems; she is helping shape the future of technology at MetLife.
