The Opportunity
The Senior Accountant role is part of MetLife’s Group Benefits Finance team, supporting the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting for the Group Benefits business. The team ensures regulatory compliance, maintains reliable accounting records, and supports key close and reporting processes that enable informed decision‑making across the organization.
The Senior Accountant assists in preparing financial statements, supporting month‑end close, analyzing expenses, and preparing payroll and commission‑related entries. The role manages allocations, reconciles corporate card and bank activity, and provides analysis and documentation for internal and external audits. This position plays a key role in maintaining compliance, process accuracy, and operational excellence across the Group Benefits Controller organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead month‑ and quarter‑end close activities, ensuring timely and accurate financial results
- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and schedules in accordance with GAAP and statutory requirements
- Maintain strong internal controls, SOX compliance, and overall integrity of financial reporting processes
- Deliver written analyses of financial results, variances, and operational impacts
- Collaborate across Finance and business teams to resolve issues and enhance processes
- Prepare investment‑in‑subsidiary and tax provision JEs; complete TB reporting and reconcile to PeopleSoft
- Complete equity account reconciliations, roll P&L reversals and YE tax entries to equity
- Prepare Board slides, GAAP Versant TPA reports, VHHC cash flow summary
- Produce revenue‑by‑state, apportionment, OH CAT, and WA B&O tax allocations
- Support PWC SALT/federal tax requests, TPA tax data maintenance, and compliance inquiries
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years’ accounting experience in public or corporate environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Ability to multi‑task, meet deadlines, and excel in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong independent judgment with effective communication and collaboration skills
- Detail‑oriented, organized, and proactive
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
- Health insurance industry experience
- Experience with NetSuite
