The MetLife Corporate Systems Technology (CST) organization is evolving to enable MetLife’s New Frontier strategy. The Opportunity

The AVP, Product Development Engineering is responsible for the overall strategic direction and leading the organization in enabling and transforming all the functions which support running the business of MetLife. This leader is responsible for delivering strategic, transformational initiatives that may include in-house, cloud/multi-cloud vendor solutions, APIs, DevOps enablement and application modernization, working collaboratively with enterprise partners across the business. The leader is charged to introduce innovation, driving for game-changing, digitally enabled, modernized technologies while ensuring adherence to changing legislation and regulation. They must be a seasoned, inspiring, empathetic, and passionate leader able to bridge advisory, strategy, modernized technology solutions and delivery. This individual must have the requisite leadership and influencing skills to be regarded as an effective business partner by their respective business peers and across cross-functional MetLife leadership teams.


Key Responsibilities

Lead teams in the development and maintenance of E2E IT solutions that support a portfolio of Actuarial applications supporting all lines of business. Includes the creation and implementation of technology roadmap and management of technical debt.

  • Deep understanding of the functions performed by the U.S. Actuarial organization and future technology solutions
  • Strategic planning incorporating emerging technology trends, industry standards, regulatory, and legal considerations culminating in technology roadmaps to drive business partner decision making
  • Serve as a strong change agent and visionary leader with the ability to lead and inspire technology professionals to succeed in a fast-changing market, keeping the team focused on breakthrough strategies and tactics to best leverage the resources of the company
  • Partner and influence stakeholders at the senior levels in the organization; participate in strategic planning boards and discussions and be the trusted technology partner
  • Develop and implement the purpose and strategy based on the business partner objectives across all domains; align goals, execute flawlessly
  • Proven ability to apply broad industry knowledge and enter perspective toward structuring and executing solutions to complex business problems – bringing forward a range of technology solutions, third party vendors and direct advisory
  • Responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating IT-related risks to ensure the integrity and availability of information assets
  • Manage investing in the business initiatives as well as running the business through tight focus on operating expense and transparency of costs with the business; manage alternate sourcing arrangements for efficiency and align to global allocation models
  • Drive forward the DevOps and Agile methods to simplify processes, increase automation and speed of delivery
  • Continually recruit, retain, rotate, develop a diverse team to ensure new technologies and innovation are at forefront for the team
  • Manage and reduce Risk including Audit, Security, and IT Risk
  • Act as the AI leader for the Actuarial, Risk and Treasury IT organization
  • Be a culture leader by partnering with site leaders in supporting community events and key social causes
  • Matrix management responsibility for cross functional team members aligned to product teams
  • Collaborate with vendors to ensure consistent delivery of services
  • Maintain currency of technology portfolio by ensuring supported applications are consistently within one release of vendor’s latest offering

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree required. (MS or other advanced degree preferred)
  • 15+ years’ experience in leading enterprise application development teams
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of Actuarial functions and associated regulatory requirements
  • Expert ability to lead application development at scale, employing SDLC methodologies including Agile and Scrum
  • Experience developing and supporting mission-critical applications optimized to run in the cloud or virtualized environments
  • Experience with cloud technologies and Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with Data Bricks
  • Able to demonstrate AI fluency, including the ability to effectively use, evaluate, and responsibly apply AI tools to enhance decision-making, efficiency, and work quality.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Business Process Reengineering to analyze and redesign existing business processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Experience with data base architecture and design, data modeling, data lineage and data governance
  • Exceptional leadership skills with ability to create and retain diverse teams of technical professionals driven by a clear understanding of organizational goals and individual purpose in their achievement
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with all stakeholders
  • A keen desire to provide ongoing transparency to stakeholders and foster an environment of trust and confidence
  • Driven to the advancement of employee satisfaction and career development by demonstrating a clear interest in them and their success
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, analytical and problem-solving skills to effectively lead areas of responsibility and attain goals
  • The ability to negotiate, influence and reach a compromise
  • Demonstrated desire to retain currency in related business and technology disciplines by ongoing education, networking, and certifications where applicable

Location Expectation: This is a hybrid role requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in office.

The expected salary range for this position is $164,200 - $218,900. This role may also be eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation and stock-based long-term incentives. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
