The Head of Underwriting will lead the Underwriting team, including Chief Underwriters, Underwriting Technical Managers, and Pricing Underwriters to shape the expertise and success of the Underwriting team across Employee Benefits.

The Opportunity

Drive underwriting philosophy for the Employee Benefits business, providing thought leadership and guidance to ensure MetLife stays abreast of competitors, adjusting our practices to develop an innovative, talented and successful underwriting capability. 

Collaborate with other functions to deliver a robust end-to-end underwriting service.

How You’ll Help Us Build a Confident Future (Key Responsibilities)

• Lead the underwriting team to develop a strong underwriting philosophy and its interpretation commercially, to help achieve sales targets whilst balancing acceptable risk.
• Provide thought leadership and expert underwriting capability within the Underwriting team. 
• Work with the Actuarial and Pricing teams to deliver competitive and customer focused pricing outcomes that help to drive growth.
• Support key strategic relationships, both internally and externally by making pragmatic and commercially focused underwriting decisions whilst delivering Fair Customer Value.
• Identify and develop key stakeholder relationships both within MetLife and externally.
• Accountable for driving underwriting margins working in close partnership with the Head of Employee Benefits. 
• Ensure robust education, coaching and training plans are in place for the department.

What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications)

• Relevant underwriting experience, preferably with the Group Protection market
• Financial service qualifications, e.g. GR1, CII
• Be able and happy to work in a hybrid arrangement, which will see you in our Brighton office 2 days a week
• Demonstrate the ability to lead a large team with some remote workers
• Have a strong commercial and strategic mindset
• Demonstrate expert levels of relevant knowledge and skills to perform all aspects of the job
• Have attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure
• Take ownership and personal responsibility for delivering timely, high-quality work
• Have good communication skills with the ability to interact with various stakeholders.
